Getting the Most from Your Elliptical Trainer

There is no doubt that working out with an elliptical can provide you with a great workout.  In fact, there are many benefits to using a workout that you cannot necessary get from other pieces of workout equipment.  In addition, when used in combination with other exercises or when you use a little creativity with your elliptical workout, you can maximize the benefits of using one of these machines while also staving off boredom.

Benefits of Using an Elliptical Trainer

There are numerous benefits to using an elliptical trainer.  Some of these include:

  • · It offers the ease of use of a stair climber while also allowing you to utilize your natural stride to its fullest
  • · It helps you get a great cardiovascular workout without putting extra stress on your back or joints because it provides a low-impact workout while also allowing you to stand fully upright
  • · You can choose to workout just the lower body, just the upper body or both at the same time
  • · You work out a variety of different muscle groups because you engage in both forward and backward motion
  • · It is a great workout option for beginners as well as athletes because your workout routine can be easily adjusted to suit individual needs

Exploring Workout Options

In order to get the best workout possible and to keep yourself interested in your workout, it is important to add some variety to your routine when using an elliptical trainer.  If you want to stick with just your elliptical trainer, one popular routine is to engage in each of the following for 5 minutes:

  • · Low Exertion
  • · Easy Pace
  • · Moderate Pace
  • · Hard Pace
  • · Moderate Pace
  •  · Easy Pace
  • · Low Exertion
  • · Cool Down

Of course, if you are just getting started, you may need to work your way up to the full 45 minute workout. 

Another option is to engage in interval training in which you exercise on your elliptical trainer for 5 minutes, then get off and do another exercise such as lunges for 5 minutes before getting back on the elliptical for another 5 minutes.  By alternating back and forth between exercises, you can keep your heart rate up while giving certain muscle groups a short break as you workout others.

It may take a bit of experimentation for you to develop the routine that is best suited to your needs and that you enjoy.  Regardless, if you include an elliptical trainer in your routine, you can be certain you will be getting a great workout!
