Is Drinking Enhanced Water the Way to Go?

Everyone knows that it is important to keep yourself hydrated while working out.  Not only does staying hydrated help fend off exhaustion so you can extend the intensity and length of your workout, it also helps keep your body healthy and functioning properly.  Although we all know that it is important to drink plenty of water while working out, you may not be so certain about the types of water you should drink.

How Can There Be Different Types of Water?

You may be asking yourself how there could possibly be different types of water.  After all, water is water, right?  While it may seem that simple, today’s drink and food manufacturers have actually provided consumers with a wide array of different types of water to select from.  In addition to various bottled water options, there are also vitamin enhanced waters available on the market.

What is Vitamin Enhanced Water?

Just as the name implies, vitamin enhanced water is water with vitamins added to it.  By adding vitamins to the water, manufacturers claim that your water can provide you with more than just help with rehydration – it can also provide you with some much-needed nutrients.  In addition to being enhanced with vitamins, this water is also flavored.  Therefore, for those that do not care for drinking water, vitamin enhanced water is possibly a good alternative.

What are the Problems Associated with Vitamin Enhanced Water?

While vitamin enhanced water sounds good in theory, it does contain some calories.  In addition, some of the ingredients used to flavor the water may be undesirable.  Therefore, it is important to read the ingredients list before purchasing this type of water.  Propel, for example, contains sucralose.  In addition, it does contain 10 calories per 8 ounce serving.  On the other hand, it does contain a number of vitamins such as B6, B12, C and E as well as Pantothenic Acid and Niacin. 

While drinking flavored water does contain some calories and may include ingredients that you don’t want to drink, it may be a good alternative for you if you are not a fan of water.  Ideally, however, you should eat a healthy and balanced diet that will help you get all off the nutrients and vitamins you need while drinking pure water as you workout.
