Tips to avoid harmful hazards in the gym

People go the gym to get and stay in better health.
However, many gyms have materials or chemicals in them that can cause allergies to flare up, or worse yet trigger serious health issues.
Here are three common hazards to be aware of in your local gym,
Yoga mats – The materials used in some commonly sold yoga mats and exercise mats can sometimes trigger allergic reactions for people with latex allergies, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).
Trace amounts of latex are found in some types of rubber mats.
Fear not, though, because there are greener, safer mats on the market made of hemp or organic cotton.
Even if you’re not allergic to latex, rubber mats also contain other types of chemicals so you still may want to try a more natural yoga mat, such as the Gaiam Sol Shakti Rubber Yoga Mat or any mat from Jade Yoga.
Swimming Pool – A public swimming pool that’s not properly chlorinated can really cause itchy eyes and a runny nose. If you aren’t feeling good after your swims, check with a club or pool manager to ask if your pool is properly ventilated, or if the correct amount of chlorine is being used.
Another thing that can help is to shower right after swimming to wash away chemicals.
If this doesn’t help, there are saltwater pools available to swim in at some clubs.
Soap – You should be extra careful to wash your hands at a gym, but one type of soap actually presents health risks according to many experts.
Avoid antibacterial soaps that contain triclosan, a common ingredient in soap that is linked to thyroid disease, compromised immune systems, and hormonal chaos that could affect your weight and health.
Ask your gym to carry a natural soap such as unscented Green Seal Certified, Dr. Bronner’s or Pangea. If that fails you may want to bring your own natural soap.
