Using Interval Training for a Better Treadmill Workout

If you are looking to get the most out of your treadmill workout, you may want to seriously consider engaging in interval training.  Interval training helps you burn a greater number of calories within a shorter period of time while also improving your overall cardiovascular performance.  In addition, with the help of interval training, you can improve your level of endurance, which means you will be able to push yourself further when you are ready to take your workout to the next level.

The concept of interval training is quite simple.  First, you engage in a warm-up in order to help prevent injury.  Then, you run at a high speed before running or walking at a slow pace before returning to a higher speed again.

Although you will have to choose your own pace and timeframe, a sample workout involving interval training would be as follows:

  • · Warm up for about 10 minutes by walking or lightly jogging on the treadmill
  • · Run about a half mile at your highest speed
  • · Walk or jog at a light pace for three to five minutes
  • · Run another half mile at your highest speed
  • · Repeat the process
  • · Cool down for about ten minutes by walking or jogging lightly

Of course, it is always a good idea to consult with a professional trainer when planning an interval training workout.  This way, you can create a workout routine that will provide you with the best outcome without leading to burnout or injury.  In addition, be prepared to make changes to your program as your level of fitness increases.  That way, you can push yourself to the next level and get the most benefit from your workout.
